History of the Cathedral

The original cathedral in Noto was destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 1693, which destroyed many cities in the area. The cathedral was then rebuilt on the site of the old church of San Nicolò, with work beginning in 1694 and continuing until the early 18th century. The cathedral was designed by the architect Rosario Gagliardi, who was responsible for many of the Baroque masterpieces in Sicily.

Architecture of the Cathedral

This monument is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, featuring a stunning façade with elaborate carvings and sculptures. The façade is divided into three sections, with the central section featuring a large rose window and the two side sections featuring statues of saints and other religious figures.
The interior of the cathedral is equally impressive, with a large central nave flanked by side chapels. The cathedral is adorned with beautiful frescoes, paintings and sculptures, including works by some of the most famous artists of the Baroque period.
One of the highlights of the cathedral is the large dome, which is supported by four columns and decorated with frescoes of saints and angels. The dome is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy, and offers visitors a stunning view of the interior of the cathedral.

Visiting the Cathedral

The church is located in the heart of Noto, making it easy to visit as part of a walking tour of the city. Visitors are welcome to enter the cathedral free of charge, and guided tours are available for those who wish to learn more about the history and architecture of the cathedral.
One of the best times to visit the cathedral is during the annual feast of San Corrado, which takes place in early February. The feast is dedicated to the patron saint of Noto, and includes a procession through the city and a special mass in the cathedral.
